Paddy served in the Royal Marines for 13 years before joining the Foreign Office in 1972. After entering parliament in 1983, he was elected leader of the Liberal Democrats in 1988 – a position he held for eleven years. Between 2002 and 2006, he was the International Community High Representative and the European Union Special Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He is president of UNICEF UK and the European Movement, a frequent contributor to UK newspapers, and the author of nine books. He co-founded a new political movement – MoreUnited - in 2016, following the ‘Brexit’ referendum.
